Gastropexy Cost in 2026: $600 Planned, $7,500 at 2am

A dog gastropexy costs $600 to $7,500 in the United States, and $1,800 is the typical price. Regionally the typical price runs from $700 in Las Vegas, Nevada to $4,000 in Northampton, Massachusetts — a 5.7x spread for the same procedure.

Two prices for tacking the same stomach

A gastropexy sutures the stomach to the abdominal wall so it cannot rotate. The operation is nearly identical whether it is planned or performed at 2am; the price is not.

Three practices publish both halves on their own fee sheets, which is the cleanest way to see it.

• Veterinary Surgery Service (Fort Walton Beach, Florida): $1,800 all-inclusive prophylactic under 90 lbs, $2,200 at 90 lbs and over — and $3,500 all-inclusive for GDV correction once the stomach has already twisted.
• Holly Vet Clinic (Kenmore, Washington): $1,500 preventive, $5,000 GDV. A 3.3x gap at one practice.
• Warm Springs Pet Hospital publishes $5,000 for gastric dilatation and volvulus on its complex surgeries list.

MetLife puts emergency bloat surgery at $2,000 to over $7,500 and publishes a verified $5,900 claim.

Two more practices price the emergency half without publishing the elective one. Access Veterinary Care in Minneapolis publishes $2,200 for bloat surgery, and Integrity Veterinary Center, a 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital, publishes $3,500 to $4,500 for a gastropexy.

A blended "gastropexy costs $600 to $7,500" is technically true and useless. The two bands to plan against are $600 to $2,200 scheduled and $2,200 to $7,500 as an emergency.

The add-on discount is published, not folklore

Two practices put a number on doing the gastropexy during another operation.

Affordable Veterinary Surgery charges $1,000 for a gastropexy alone and $800 as an add-on to another surgery. Affordable Animal Surgery publishes $600 to $800 and states the price varies on the size of the pet and on whether the gastropexy is added to a primary spay or neuter or done alone.

ACVS confirms the clinical version of the same point: prophylactic gastropexy "can often be done at the same time as sterilization surgeries".

The mechanism is the same one that makes an umbilical hernia repair cheap during a neuter. One anaesthetic, one monitoring period, one hospitalisation, one recovery — paid once instead of twice.

If you own a deep-chested breed and the spay or neuter has not happened yet, that appointment is the cheapest gastropexy you will ever be offered. Shore Pet Surgery publishes a flat $750 including IV fluids and medications, and Chester Animal Hospital publishes $1,400 to $1,600 for the laparoscopic version.

Pet insurance pays for the expensive version and not the cheap one

This is the clearest coverage inversion on this site.

Emergency GDV surgery is covered by any accident-and-illness policy. MetLife's own published example is a golden retriever whose $5,900 emergency GDV surgery was reimbursed at over $4,650 on an 80% policy with a $250 deductible.

A prophylactic gastropexy — the cheaper operation that prevents that bill entirely — is elective, and is generally not covered. It needs a wellness or routine-care add-on, and most add-on schedules do not list it.

And if the gastropexy is done during a spay or neuter, the whole event is elective and falls outside illness cover, which means the cheapest version of this surgery is also the least reimbursable.

Insurers will pay four thousand dollars towards the 2am operation and nothing towards the $800 daytime one. That is worth knowing before you decide the preventive version is not affordable.

There is one thing to check rather than assume. Ask your carrier in writing whether a gastropexy performed during a covered illness surgery — a foreign body removal, say — is reimbursed as part of that claim. The answer varies by carrier and nobody publishes it, so it is a question rather than a rule.

What a GDV night adds that no gastropexy quote contains

The surgical fee is the part everyone quotes. The rest arrives around it.

Stabilisation first. ACVS states most GDV patients need IV fluids and oxygen before anesthesia is safe. CareCredit's national average for an IV catheter and one bag of fluid is $130; a decompensating dog needs several.

Diagnostics. ACVS: abdominal x-rays confirm the diagnosis and an ECG evaluates the arrhythmias commonly seen later in the disease course. CareCredit averages $334 for an emergency radiograph series.

Whatever else has to come out. ACVS says removal of part of the stomach wall, or of the spleen, is performed if necessary once the abdomen is open. Neither is in any published gastropexy price, and the splenectomy page prices that second operation on its own.

Days of intensive care. Most patients are hospitalised for several days with continuous cardiac monitoring. At CareCredit's $866 national average for an emergency-clinic night, three nights is roughly $2,600 on top of the surgery.

The surcharge for the hour. Animal Works publishes emergency staffing fees of $200 to $1,200 as a separate line, on a list headed by the warning to expect additional emergency fees on top of the listed surgery price.

Is a preventive gastropexy worth it for my breed?

The economics are unusually clean because both numbers are published by the same practices.

At Holly Vet Clinic the preventive operation is $1,500 and the emergency one is $5,000. At Veterinary Surgery Service it is $1,800 against $3,500. Add the hospitalisation and the surcharges above and the emergency version realistically runs three to five times the elective one.

That is before the outcome difference, which is the part money does not fix. A dog with a twisted stomach is a time-critical emergency; a dog having a scheduled gastropexy is a dog going home the same week.

The breeds this is offered to — Great Danes, St Bernards and other large, deep-chested dogs — are also the ones that cross Veterinary Surgery Service's 90 lb weight band, a flat $400 step.

Eight practices publish a prophylactic price spanning $600 to $2,200. If a quote lands outside that, ask what is bundled into it. All-inclusive fees at Veterinary Surgery Service and Shore Pet Surgery already contain the anesthesia, monitoring and take-home medication that other practices bill separately, which is worth more than the headline difference between them.

Does laparoscopic gastropexy cost more?

Only one US practice publishes a price for it, and it sits mid-band rather than at the top.

Chester Animal Hospital in New Jersey publishes $1,400 to $1,600 for a preventive laparoscopic gastropexy — inside the $600 to $2,200 range for open prophylactic gastropexy, not above it.

ACVS lists laparoscopic-assisted, endoscopically assisted and grid gastropexy as options for prophylactic cases. The real cost of the minimally invasive route is not the fee, it is access: the equipment and training are not in every general practice, so the case moves to a referral hospital that prices everything else higher too.

Where these numbers still lean on a carrier

The $7,500 high on this page comes from MetLife rather than a fee sheet, and we would rather label it than launder it.

The gap has narrowed since our first pass. Two practices now publish $5,000 for the emergency version and a 24-hour specialty hospital publishes $3,500 to $4,500, so the carrier figure is no longer an outlier — but it is still the only source at the very top.

No 50-state or regional survey exists for gastropexy, so the four census-region rows are indexed estimates rather than published regional prices, and the metro rows below them are individual practices' own fee sheets.

The same elective-versus-emergency arithmetic runs through pyometra surgery, where an elective spay costs about a quarter of the emergency version of the same operation. Two invoices for the same procedure diverge for a small number of reasons. These are the ones that move the total most.

Prophylactic versus emergency - this is not one price, it is two

Three practices publish both halves. Veterinary Surgery Service: $1,800 prophylactic under 90 lbs against $3,500 for GDV correction. Holly Vet Clinic: $1,500 preventive against $5,000 GDV. Body weight, on the elective side

Veterinary Surgery Service charges $1,800 up to 89 lbs and $2,200 at 90 lbs and over - a flat $400 step, and the at-risk breeds (Great Danes, St Bernards) are the ones that cross it

Doing it at the same time as the spay or neuter

Does pet insurance cover dog gastropexy?

Dog Gastropexy is normally covered by a standard accident-and-illness policy. This is the clearest coverage split on the site, and it runs the wrong way round from what owners expect. Emergency GDV surgery is covered by any accident-and-illness policy: MetLife's own published example is a golden retriever whose $5,900 emergency GDV surgery was reimbursed at over $4,650 on an 80% policy with a $250 deductible. A prophylactic gastropexy, the cheaper operation that prevents that bill, is elective and is generally NOT covered - it needs a wellness or routine-care add-on, and even then most schedules do not list it.
