A dog bladder stone surgery costs $587 to $5,000 in the United States, and $1,700 is the typical price. Regionally the typical price runs from $925 in Grasonville, Maryland to $4,500 in Northampton, Massachusetts — a 4.9x spread for the same procedure.

Which stone your dog has decides whether it needs surgery at all

ACVS puts struvite at 50% of canine urinary stones and calcium oxalate at about 35%. Only struvite can sometimes be dissolved by diet.

Calcium oxalate, urate, cystine and silicate stones do not dissolve. They come out.

That single fact splits this page's readers into two groups with completely different bills, and it is decided by a laboratory, not by a surgeon. Stone analysis costs $50 to $150 and is included in the fee at Shore Pet Surgery and Veterinary Surgery Service and billed separately elsewhere.

Skipping the analysis to save a hundred dollars is a false economy. It is the test that tells you which prevention diet to use, and ACVS says plainly that many of these stones have a high recurrence rate.

A teaching hospital publishes three routes, and what it leaves out

The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine publishes a pre-referral estimate sheet valid until 31 March 2027. It is the only US source we found pricing all three surgical routes side by side.

• Open cystotomy: $3,500 to $4,800.
• Cystoscopic-assisted cystotomy through a half-inch incision: $2,800 to $4,000.
• Transurethral cystoscopy with laser lithotripsy, no incision at all: $3,300 to $4,500.
• Urethrostomy added when stones cannot be retrieved from the urethra: a further $615 to $1,228.

None of those figures includes the internal medicine workup UT requires before either minimally invasive option, which it prices separately at $1,300 to $1,900.

That exclusion is the number to carry into any referral conversation. A $2,800 quote that assumes a $1,600 workup is a $4,400 quote.

The catch on the cheapest-sounding route is candidacy rather than cost. UT states that cats and male dogs are not candidates for the transurethral approach, which removes it for roughly half of all dogs before price enters the discussion.

A blocked dog costs more at the same practice

Two practices publish the obstruction premium in their own numbers, which is rarer than it should be.

Shore Pet Surgery publishes $925 for a canine cystotomy including stone analysis, and $1,375 for a blocked or emergency cystotomy in a large dog. Same practice, same bladder, a $450 difference decided by whether the dog can still urinate.

Rush Veterinary Urgent Care in Allentown separates uncomplicated ($1,700 to $2,000) from complicated ($2,000 to $2,300) canine cystotomy on its own price list, and prices a feline cystotomy at $1,600 to $1,900.

Loving Paws adds $800 to $1,000 to a $1,250 cystotomy if the dog is obstructed.

The pattern is consistent across all three: obstruction adds 20% to 80% to the same operation, before any after-hours surcharge.

8.5x between a general practice and a referral centre

This is the widest driver on the page, and it dwarfs geography.

At the bottom: Ace of Spays publishes $760 for a canine cystotomy removing fewer than five stones, and Care For Paws $699 to $949. CareCredit quotes the Animal Humane Society's published schedule at $586.95 — we cite CareCredit's quotation because that schedule returns a 403 to automated fetching, and we would rather name the intermediary than pretend we read the original.

At the top: Integrity Veterinary Center, a 24-hour emergency and specialty hospital in Massachusetts, publishes $4,000 to $5,000 and qualifies it "stable patient". UT's open cystotomy is $3,500 to $4,800 before its workup.

The crowded middle is where most dogs are treated: Humane Colorado $975, Affordable Veterinary Surgery $1,000, FairPet Surgery Center $1,520, Pet Surgery Center of Fort Lauderdale $1,570 to $1,748 by weight, Access Veterinary Care $1,700, Veterinary Surgery Service $1,800 all-inclusive, Clarity $1,867, Veterinary Surgical Solutions $1,559 to $2,181 by weight.

Fifteen published prices, and the median is $1,700. If your quote is above $2,500, the question worth asking is what the referral is buying — cystoscopy, a board-certified surgeon, or 24-hour staffing you may not need.

Three questions that move this quote more than shopping does

Ask them before you accept a referral estimate, because each one is worth hundreds of dollars and none of them is on the price sheet.

Is the internal medicine workup included? UT publishes it at $1,300 to $1,900 and excludes it from every surgical figure on its own sheet. Most referral quotes are built the same way.

Is stone analysis included? Shore Pet Surgery and Veterinary Surgery Service bundle it; others add $50 to $150. It is the test that decides your dog's prevention plan, so the answer you want is yes either way.

Is my dog a candidate for the cheapest route? UT states cats and male dogs are not candidates for transurethral lithotripsy. A quote comparison that includes a route your dog cannot have is not a comparison.

The imaging is worth checking too. CareCredit's national averages are $213 for a dog x-ray and $483 for an abdominal ultrasound, and neither is inside most published surgical fees.

Can bladder stones be dissolved without surgery?

Struvite stones sometimes can. Nothing else will.

We found no acceptable source publishing a dollar price for dietary dissolution, so this page describes the option and does not price it. That is a real gap and not a rounding one — dissolution is the cheapest possible outcome of this condition and nobody publishes what it costs.

What is published is the constraint. ACVS notes urinary tract infection is an important factor in struvite formation, which is why urinalysis and culture — $78 to $200 on CareCredit's averages — sit at the front of this workup rather than the back.

ACVS also publishes the one genuinely encouraging prevention figure in this condition: urate stones can be prevented in 80% of dogs.

Why is the prescription diet excluded when the surgery is covered?

Because carriers classify it as food, not as treatment. The operation is reimbursed and the diet that prevents the next stone is not, which is the perverse incentive in this condition.

That last clause is where these claims fail. Crystalluria noted on a routine urinalysis a year earlier is enough for many carriers to call a later stone pre-existing.

The prescription dissolution or prevention diet is usually excluded as food, even when the surgery it replaces would have been reimbursed in full. The same exclusion applies to the urinary diet on the cat PU surgery page, and it has the same effect: the cheap thing that prevents recurrence is the one you pay for yourself.

What we could not price

No 50-state or regional survey exists for canine bladder stone surgery. The four census-region rows in the table below are indexed from the national range using the geographic ratio measured across CareCredit's 2025 procedure tables, and they are estimates.

The metro rows are published fee sheets and one teaching-hospital estimate, and they are not regionally adjusted — the $925-to-$4,800 gap between Maryland and Tennessee is a general-practice versus referral-centre difference, not a map.

Dietary dissolution is unpriced, as above. So is the lifetime of recurrence monitoring that ACVS's high-recurrence warning implies.
