Boston charges $2 for this shot. A California Petco clinic charges $43.

The City of Boston, with the Animal Rescue League, charges $2 for residents aged 70 and over, $5 for other residents and $10 for non-residents at its low-cost rabies clinic. Petco's Vetco clinic in Garey, California publishes $43 for the same vaccine.

Both are "low-cost". Neither is a private veterinary practice. The gap between them is 21x, and it is the gap this page is about.

There are three kinds of cheap door, and they are not interchangeable:

  • County and city clinics, $0 to $25. Government-run, calendar-driven, often only a few dates a year.
  • Nonprofit and humane-society clinics, $25 to $30. Walk-in, regular hours, fewer residency tests.
  • Retail vaccination clinics, $31 to $43. Tractor Supply's PetVet and Petco's Vetco, weekly, no appointment, no residency requirement at all.

If what you want is the price of a rabies shot in general — private practice included, plus the state-law rules and the county registration tag — that is our dog rabies shot cost page. This one starts after you have already decided to skip the practice, and prices the doors that are left.

The free shot is real, and it is attached to a bill you already owed

Two of the cheapest published options in the country are free, with a condition. Montgomery County, Maryland gives the rabies vaccine away with the purchase of a county pet licence and charges $4 without one. Cook County, Illinois runs free one-year rabies clinics with free microchips through its Partners in Prevention programme.

Montgomery County's version is the more interesting one, because the licence is not optional. You were legally required to buy it; the county is discounting the thing you would have paid for anyway rather than the thing you came for.

That is why the schema behind this page has a $2 floor rather than a $0 one. Zero is available in specific counties on specific dates, and the published non-zero floor is Boston's $2 senior rate.

The catch on all of it is the calendar. Orange County, North Carolina and Boston publish clinic dates, not opening hours, and a free clinic you cannot reach on a Saturday in April is priced at whatever your next-best option charges.

Retail chains hold the bundle price flat and let the shelf price move

The most useful pricing fact in this dataset is one the chains publish without commenting on it. Across ten Tractor Supply PetVet locations, the à-la-carte rabies price ran $35 in East Ellijay, Georgia to $42 in Watsonville and Walnut Creek, California. The price as an add-on to a vaccination package was $31 at all ten.

So the bundle discount is worth $4 in Georgia and $11 in California. Same chain, same vial, same package — the saving more than doubles depending on which store you stand in.

Vetco does the same thing with a smaller gap: $39 à la carte and $36 bundled in Chicago, against $43 and $39 in Garey, California.

The practical rule follows directly. In a low-cost market, buying rabies on its own at a retail clinic is close to fair value. In an expensive one, the single shot is where the chain makes its margin, and adding a second vaccine you actually need — the DHPP dose, usually — pulls the rabies price down by a quarter.

The two things worth buying at the same table

A rabies clinic is a counter, and the counter sells three things. The second one is the microchip, and it is the cheapest it will ever be: $10 at Montgomery County, Maryland, $15 at Loudoun County, Virginia and free to residents there, $20 in Fairfax County, $25 at Humane Animal Partners in Delaware, $30 at Haven Humane in Redding, California, and $36 at Vetco. Cook County gives it away at every clinic date.

The third is the core distemper-parvo combination, which runs $10 in Loudoun County and $15 in Montgomery County against $41 to $50 at a retail clinic. Orange County, North Carolina gives DA2PPV away free at its combined dates.

Both are things your dog needs anyway, at a fifth of retail. If you are driving to a county clinic for a $10 rabies shot, arriving without the microchip decision made is the mistake this page would most like to prevent.

Bring the old certificate, or the cheap shot costs you three visits

Orange County, North Carolina charges $10 whether the dose is the one-year or the three-year product, and will only give the three-year vaccine to an owner holding a prior rabies certificate. It says explicitly that a tag alone is not sufficient.

Read that as a price. The same $10 buys one year of cover or three, and the only variable is a piece of paper in a drawer at home.

Boston applies the same rule: its clinic gives the three-year vaccine at the same fee with proof of previous vaccination. Over six years, an owner who forgets the certificate every time makes six trips instead of two.

That is the largest avoidable cost on this page, and it is not money. It is the Saturday.

Does the three-year vaccine save money at a low-cost clinic?

Not on the first shot, and no clinic will let it. Both the 2016 JAVMA rabies compendium and the 2022 AAHA canine vaccination guidelines require a booster one year after a dog's first rabies dose regardless of which formulation was used.

A puppy or a newly adopted dog with no history is therefore back in twelve months whatever you paid. Paying a premium for a three-year product at that first visit buys nothing.

From the second dose onward the arithmetic flips, and at a clinic that charges one flat fee — Orange County's $10, Boston's $5 — the three-year product is simply three times the value for the same money.

Check the local interval before assuming it applies. McLean County, Illinois licenses on either a one-year or three-year tag, and a three-year vaccine given to a dog its county still licenses annually saves nothing.

What a $10 clinic does not buy

No physical exam, and that is the whole of the discount. A private practice's rabies charge is bundled with a consultation; a county clinic's is not, which is why one is $10 and the other lands near $95.

No medical record your regular vet can see, no one to ask about a limp, and a queue outdoors in a car park. For a healthy adult dog on a routine booster, none of that matters.

Three situations where it does. A puppy, whose rabies dose sits inside a full vaccination series and a growth check. A senior dog with bloodwork due. And any dog with a symptom you have already noticed, where the exam is the point and the vaccine is incidental.

Our low-cost vet directory lists the clinics that sit between those two poles — reduced-fee practices that do examine the dog.

Is the cheapest rabies shot always the right buy?

For a healthy adult dog with a current medical record, yes, and the saving is large: $2 to $25 at a municipal clinic against $20 to $70 for the vaccine alone in private practice, before the exam fee that practice adds.

It stops being the right buy when the visit is the product. If the dog is due anything else — a dental assessment, a lump checked, geriatric bloodwork — the exam fee you avoided is being avoided twice.

It also stops being the right buy when the cheap price is means-tested and you do not qualify. Miami-Dade County charges $25 standard and $10 for income-qualified residents; Boston charges $10 to non-residents. Turning up outside the tested group means paying the ordinary price after the drive.

How reliable are these published clinic prices?

Every figure on this page is a fee read off the provider's own website, so nothing here is estimated. What that buys in accuracy it costs in coverage.

A 2026 peer-reviewed survey in Frontiers in Veterinary Science found only 3 of 157 US small-animal clinics with websites — 1.91% — publish any price at all. This is the set of providers that publish, not a representative sample of what is available near you.

County fees also move with the clinic calendar rather than with the year. The Boston and Orange County figures are tied to specific 2026 clinic dates, and a programme that ran free last spring can charge $10 this autumn.

Use the named rows as a floor to negotiate against, not as a quote. The rest of the routine bills are priced the same way on our vet cost index.

How each regional row was sourced
Northeast (published)
The City of Boston low-cost rabies clinic, run with the Animal Rescue League of Boston, charges $2 for residents aged 70 or over, $5 for other Boston residents and $10 for non-residents. Tractor Supply PetVet clinics in Greenfield, Massachusetts and York, Pennsylvania publish $40 a la carte for the same shot, or $31 as an add-on to a package.
Midwest (published)
Cook County, Illinois runs free one-year rabies clinics with free microchips through its Partners in Prevention programme, so the floor in this region is zero at a clinic date you can reach. McLean County, Illinois charges $15 for a combined one-year vaccination and registration tag for an altered dog. Tractor Supply PetVet publishes $38 in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Midland, Michigan; Petco Vetco publishes $39 in Chicago.
South (published)
Montgomery County, Maryland gives the rabies vaccine free with the purchase of a county pet licence and charges $4 without one. Loudoun County, Virginia and Orange County, North Carolina both publish $10; Fairfax County, Virginia publishes $20; Miami-Dade County, Florida publishes $25 standard and $10 for income-qualified residents; Humane Animal Partners in Delaware publishes $30. Tractor Supply PetVet publishes $35 in East Ellijay, Georgia and $41 in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.
West (published)
Haven Humane Society in Redding, California publishes $25 at its walk-in vaccine clinic. Tractor Supply PetVet publishes $42 in Watsonville and Walnut Creek, California and $40 in Chandler, Arizona. Petco Vetco pricing for Garey, California is $43 a la carte.
City of Boston, Massachusetts (published)
The city's own published clinic fees: $2 for residents 70 and over, $5 for residents, $10 for non-residents. A three-year vaccine is given at the same price if you can show proof of previous rabies vaccination. Dog licensing is charged separately at $15 spayed or neutered and $30 intact, and is free for owners 70 and over.
Petco Vetco vaccination clinics (Chicago, Illinois and Garey, California) (published)
Vetco's own zip-code-specific price menu: $39 a la carte in Chicago and $36 as an add-on to a vaccination package, against $43 a la carte and $39 as an add-on in Garey, California. The same chain, the same vaccine, an 11% gap between two markets.
Tractor Supply PetVet clinics, 10 locations surveyed (published)
A la carte prices ran from $35 in East Ellijay, Georgia to $42 in Watsonville and Walnut Creek, California across the ten location price lists checked. The package add-on price was a flat $31 at every one of the ten, so bundling is worth $4 in Georgia and $11 in California.

What changes the price

Two invoices for the same procedure diverge for a small number of reasons. These are the ones that move the total most.

County or municipal clinic versus a retail vaccination clinic
$2-$25 against $35-$43 - government clinics charge at or below cost as a public-health measure, and the 2016 JAVMA rabies compendium explicitly recommends low-cost and free rabies clinics as a control tool
Whether the county ties the vaccine to a licence purchase
Montgomery County, Maryland charges $0 with a county pet licence and $4 without; Boston charges $15-$30 for the licence separately. The free shot is bundled with a fee you were legally required to pay anyway
Residency and means testing
Boston charges $5 for residents, $10 for non-residents and $2 at age 70 and over; Miami-Dade charges $25 standard and $10 for income-qualified residents. The same shot, priced by who you are rather than what it costs
Whether you bring the previous rabies certificate
Orange County, North Carolina charges $10 for either a one-year or a three-year vaccine but will only give the three-year dose to owners holding a prior certificate, and says explicitly that a tag alone is not sufficient - forgetting the paperwork triples your visit count over six years at no saving
A la carte versus bundled at a retail clinic
Tractor Supply PetVet's package add-on price is a flat $31 at all ten locations checked while its a la carte price is $35-$42, so bundling saves $4 in Georgia and $11 in California
It is the dog's first rabies shot
No saving is available. The 2016 JAVMA rabies compendium and the 2022 AAHA canine guidelines both require a booster one year after the first dose regardless of whether a one-year or three-year product was used, so paying more for a three-year vaccine at the first visit buys nothing in year one

What the itemized invoice looks like

Clinics quote a bundled number and itemize afterwards. This is the decomposition, so you can read a real estimate line by line before you sign it.

Not every line appears on every invoice — practices bundle differently, and some of these are only billed when the procedure turns up something. Sourcing for each figure is in Sources.

Does pet insurance cover low-cost dog rabies vaccination?

Low-Cost Dog Rabies Vaccination is normally not covered by a standard accident-and-illness policy. Rabies vaccination is preventive care and is excluded from every standard accident-and-illness policy. It is reimbursed only under an optional preventive-care or wellness add-on. At the prices on this page an add-on can never pay for itself on rabies alone - a $2 municipal shot in Boston costs less than a month of any wellness rider - so the add-on question is really about the whole routine-care bundle, not about this vaccine.

What you would get back: Nothing under a base plan. Preventive-care add-ons reimburse the actual cost against a fixed annual routine-care allowance.

Coverage rules differ enough between carriers that the only useful answer is a side-by-side: our pet insurance comparison for low-cost dog rabies vaccination shows which policies pay for it, what the waiting period is, and what counts as pre-existing.

The pages below are the reasons this bill happens. Each one carries the same price data you are reading, in the context of the problem that produces it.

Preventive care that avoids this bill

  • how long does a dog rabies shot lastLetting the booster lapse without keeping the old certificate: The dog can be treated as never vaccinated after an exposure, which is quarantine rather than a revaccination fee
  • rabies shot for dogsSkipping the vaccine on a dog that never leaves the property: No legal cover after a bite incident, and the vaccination still has to be bought, usually against a deadline

  • dhpp vaccine cost A DHPP vaccine costs $10 to $60 per dose, and a puppy needs at least three of them.
