The quoted price is one dose, and a puppy needs at least three

A single DHPP dose runs $10 at Loudoun County, Virginia's low-cost clinic to $60 for Petco Vetco's 6-in-1 with leptospirosis in Chicago. The typical published figure is $42.

Multiply before you compare that with anything. The 2022 AAHA canine vaccination guidelines require at least three doses between 6 and 16 weeks of age, 2 to 4 weeks apart, for a dog under 16 weeks — and two doses 2 to 4 weeks apart for an adult dog with no vaccination history.

So the same menu price means $30 at Loudoun County and $157.50 at Tequesta Veterinary Clinic in Florida once a puppy is actually vaccinated.

The whole first-year course, including rabies and the exam fees, is on our puppy vaccine series cost page. This page is the dose.

DHPP, DAPP, DA2PP and 5-in-1 are the same purchase

The naming is inconsistent across the market and it makes price lists hard to compare. DHPP, DAPP, DA2PP, DHPPi and "5-in-1" all describe the core canine combination: distemper, adenovirus, parvovirus and usually parainfluenza.

DHLPP, DA2LPP and "6-in-1" are that same product with leptospirosis added.

This page treats them that way because that is how the clinics themselves use the terms. It does mean a like-for-like comparison across two price lists is not always as exact as it looks — the "H" in DHPP nominally stands for hepatitis, which is what adenovirus-2 protects against, and some lists include parainfluenza where others sell it separately.

When comparing two quotes, ask which antigens are in the vial rather than which acronym is on the invoice.

The leptospirosis upgrade is charged more than once

The published gap between the 5-in-1 and the 6-in-1 is small: $3.50 at Covina Animal Hospital in California, $11 at Love City Vet in Philadelphia, $14 at Vetco and $15 at Haven Humane in Redding, California.

The gap is not the cost. Leptospirosis is noncore under AAHA, needs two doses 2 to 4 weeks apart in a dog that has never had it, and then annual boosters for life.

So a $14 upgrade is $28 in the first year and $14 every year afterwards, against a core vaccine that drops to a three-year interval. Over a ten-year dog that is roughly $140 to $150 against roughly $50.

That may well be worth it — lepto is a genuine risk in wet climates, in dogs with wildlife or standing-water exposure, and it is zoonotic. It is simply not the $3.50 decision the price list makes it look like.

Annual DHPP boosters are not what the guidelines say

AAHA is unambiguous: after the one-year booster that follows the puppy series, interval boosters every three years are recommended and annual boosters are not necessary.

At $39 to $53 a dose, a practice still recalling adult dogs annually is charging roughly $80 to $105 more per three-year cycle than the guideline requires.

This is the highest-value question on the page and it takes one phone call. Ask whether the practice follows AAHA's three-year interval for core vaccines in adult dogs, and if the answer is no, ask why for this dog specifically.

There are legitimate answers — a dog with an incomplete history, a shelter intake, a titre that came back low. "It is what we do" is not one of them.

The one vaccine retail clinics will not discount

Every antigen on Tractor Supply PetVet's menu has a discounted package add-on price except this one. Across the ten locations checked, the 5-in-1 is listed as not applicable as an add-on at all ten, while rabies drops to a flat $31 and Bordetella to $42 when bundled.

So the DHPP dose costs $41 in East Ellijay, Georgia and $50 in Watsonville and Walnut Creek, California whether you buy it alone or inside a package.

That has a direct consequence for how you buy. The bundle discounts at a retail clinic come from the other vaccines, so if DHPP is the only thing your dog needs, there is no bundling saving to chase and the comparison is purely between venues.

Vetco does discount it, at $46 à la carte and $42 bundled in Chicago — which is one of the few places the two chains' pricing structures genuinely differ rather than just their numbers.

Is the three-year DHPP vaccine cheaper?

Per year, yes, on the only evidence available. Dallas Veterinary Clinic in Texas publishes $39 for a one-year canine distemper and parvovirus vaccine and $53 for a three-year — 36% more for three times the duration, or $18 a year against $13.

That single comparison is the entire published basis for this claim. Dallas Veterinary Clinic is the only practice in this survey that lists both formulations with both prices, so treat the ratio as one data point rather than as a market rate.

It is, however, the arithmetic AAHA's three-year revaccination interval is built on, and it points the same way as the guideline.

Ask which product is being drawn up before it is. A three-year vaccine given by a practice that will recall you in twelve months anyway has bought you nothing.

Where the $10 doses are

Municipal and nonprofit clinics publish the cheapest core doses in the country: $10 at Loudoun County, Virginia; $15 at Montgomery County, Maryland; $20 in Fairfax County, Virginia; $25 at Humane Animal Partners in Delaware; $30 at Haven Humane.

Orange County, North Carolina gives DA2PPV away free at its combined clinic dates, which is the cheapest core vaccination available anywhere in this dataset.

The trade is the same one you make on a cheap rabies shot: no examination, no continuity of record, and clinic dates rather than appointments. Our low-cost vet directory lists the reduced-fee practices that sit between the county clinic and full price.

Because DHPP is a core vaccine, far more government clinics stock it than stock Bordetella — which is why the cheap end of this range is genuinely reachable and the cheap end of that one is not.

Finishing the series early is the expensive saving

Stopping at 12 weeks removes one $10 to $53 dose from the bill. AAHA describes finishing the series too soon as a likely cause of most vaccine failures.

The mechanism is maternally derived antibodies, which AAHA notes can persist against parvovirus to 13 to 15 weeks of age and can block a modified-live vaccine. A dose given at 12 weeks may simply not take, and nobody can tell from the outside that it did not.

That is why the guidelines prefer finishing at 18 to 20 weeks where parvovirus risk is high, rather than at the 16 weeks most schedules default to.

One extra dose costs $10 at a county clinic. Parvovirus treatment costs several thousand.

What is thin in this data

Every row here is a published provider fee; nothing is indexed or estimated. Two figures are weaker than the rest, and both are named rather than buried.

No Northeast municipal or nonprofit clinic in this survey published a DHPP price, so that region's range rests on private and retail pricing only and its low end is not a real floor.

And the one-year versus three-year comparison rests on a single practice, because Dallas Veterinary Clinic is the only one found publishing both. A 2026 peer-reviewed survey in Frontiers in Veterinary Science found only 1.91% of US small-animal clinics publish any price online, which is the reason so many of these comparisons rest on one or two clinics rather than on a sample. The rest of the routine bills are priced the same way on our vet cost index.

What changes the price

Two invoices for the same procedure diverge for a small number of reasons. These are the ones that move the total most.

A puppy needs at least three doses, an adult needs two
AAHA Table 2: at least three doses of the combination vaccine between 6 and 16 weeks, 2-4 weeks apart, for a dog under 16 weeks; two doses 2-4 weeks apart for a dog over 16 weeks with no history. So the sticker price is charged three times in a puppy - $30 at Loudoun County, $158 at Tequesta Veterinary Clinic
5-in-1 or 6-in-1 with leptospirosis
Petco Vetco charges $46 against $60, Haven Humane $30 against $45, Love City Vet $45 against $56 and Covina Animal Hospital $39.50 against $43. Leptospirosis is noncore under AAHA, needs two doses 2-4 weeks apart in a naive dog and then annual boosters, so the upgrade is charged twice in the first year and every year afterwards
Where the dose is bought
$10 at Loudoun County, Virginia against $52.50 at a Florida private practice - a 5x spread on the same core antigens, and the largest single lever on this price
Whether the clinic still boosts annually
AAHA is unambiguous: after the one-year booster, interval boosters every three years are recommended and annual boosters are not necessary. At $39-$53 a dose, a practice still recalling annually is charging roughly $80-$105 more per three-year cycle than the guideline requires
One-year or three-year product
Dallas Veterinary Clinic publishes $39 and $53 for the two formulations - 36% more for three times the interval, or $13 a year against $18 a year
Finishing the series too early
AAHA notes maternally derived antibodies against parvovirus can persist to 13-15 weeks and can block a modified-live vaccine, and prefers finishing at 18-20 weeks where parvovirus risk is high. Stopping at 12 weeks saves one $10-$53 dose and is, in AAHA's words, a likely cause of most vaccine failures

Does pet insurance cover DHPP vaccine (canine distemper combination)?

DHPP Vaccine (Canine Distemper Combination) is normally not covered by a standard accident-and-illness policy. DHPP is preventive care and is excluded from every standard accident-and-illness policy; only an optional preventive-care or wellness add-on reimburses it. Because AAHA puts adult revaccination on a three-year cycle, the average annual DHPP cost for a grown dog is roughly $13-$18 - far too small to justify a rider on its own. The case for a routine-care add-on, if there is one, is the puppy year.

What you would get back: Nothing under a base plan. Preventive-care add-ons reimburse actual cost against a fixed annual routine-care allowance.

Coverage rules differ enough between carriers that the only useful answer is a side-by-side: our pet insurance comparison for DHPP vaccine (canine distemper combination) shows which policies pay for it, what the waiting period is, and what counts as pre-existing.
