The cheapest published feline rabies shot in America is $2

The City of Boston's low-cost clinic, run with the Animal Rescue League, charges $2 for residents aged 70 and over, $5 for other residents and $10 for non-residents, and it vaccinates cats as well as dogs. At the other end, Covina Animal Hospital in California publishes $109 for a three-year non-adjuvanted dose.

That is a 50x spread on a shot most jurisdictions require by law. Two things decide where in it you land, and neither is the state you live in.

The first is which door: a city or county clinic, a nonprofit, a retail vaccination clinic, or a veterinary practice. The second is which vial, because feline rabies vaccine comes in two forms at two prices.

Everything below prices those two decisions. If what you want is the whole kitten course rather than this one shot, that is our cat vaccine series cost page.

Cat owners have fewer free doors than dog owners

This is the finding that separates feline rabies pricing from canine, and it comes from the providers themselves. Chicago Animal Care and Control states plainly on its clinic page that it cannot accommodate cats at its low-cost vaccine clinics.

Cook County, Illinois runs free rabies clinics, and several of the dates are dog-only. A cat owner in Chicago reading "free rabies clinic" is reading about someone else's pet.

The clinics that do take cats are worth knowing by name. Boston at $2 to $10. Montgomery County, Maryland at $0 with a county pet licence and $4 without. Loudoun County, Virginia at $10. Miami-Dade County, Florida at $25, or $10 for income-qualified residents. Haven Humane in Redding, California at $25.

So the $2 to $10 floor is real, and it is harder to reach with a cat carrier than with a dog on a lead. Plan the trip before you plan the saving. The same comparison for dogs, with a much longer list of clinics, is on our cheap rabies shot for dogs page.

The non-adjuvanted vaccine is a flat $10 more, everywhere

Tractor Supply's PetVet clinics charge $35 to $42 for the adjuvanted feline rabies vaccine and $45 to $52 for the non-adjuvanted PureVax at the same ten locations. The premium is $10 in Georgia and $10 in California — flat, regardless of what the base price is doing.

Bought as a package add-on, the two prices are $31 and $39 at every location checked, so bundling narrows the gap to $8.

The reason there are two products is clinical rather than commercial. Cornell's Feline Health Center records that adjuvants were implicated as a possible cause of feline injection-site sarcomas, and notes that the non-adjuvanted line now offers a three-year formulation where earlier non-adjuvanted products lasted only one year.

Many practices no longer stock both. Tequesta Veterinary Clinic in Florida states on its own price list that it carries non-adjuvanted vaccines exclusively. If your clinic does the same, the $10 question has already been answered for you.

Three-year PureVax costs 2.4x at one clinic and 1.4x at another

The three-year product is where feline rabies pricing stops behaving. Covina Animal Hospital publishes $45 for one-year PureVax and $109 for the three-year — 2.4 times the money for three times the cover. Tequesta publishes $51 and $69.25 for the same choice, which is 1.4 times.

Per year of protection, Covina's three-year dose is $36 and its one-year dose is $45. Tequesta's are $23 and $51.

So the three-year vaccine is cheaper per year at both clinics, but at Covina the saving is 20% and at Tequesta it is 55%. Ask for both prices rather than assuming the longer product is the obvious buy.

Covina also publishes $38.50 for its general adjuvanted rabies vaccine, which is the cheapest of its three options and the one Cornell's note is about. That is the trade in one price list: $38.50, $45 or $109, for the same disease.

Is the three-year rabies vaccine worth it for a kitten?

Not for the first shot. The 2016 JAVMA rabies compendium requires a booster one year after a cat's first rabies dose regardless of which formulation was used, so a three-year vaccine given at the first visit provides one year of licensed cover and no saving.

Buy the cheapest available dose at the first vaccination and make the formulation decision at the one-year booster, when the three-year interval actually starts running.

The same rule applies to an adult cat with no vaccination history, and to one whose rabies cover has lapsed. Both are treated as first doses.

Boston sidesteps the arithmetic entirely by giving the three-year vaccine at the same $2 to $10 fee to anyone who brings proof of previous vaccination. Where the price is flat, the paperwork is the whole saving.

Do cats legally need a rabies vaccine?

Rabies vaccination of cats is required by law in most US states and municipalities, though not demonstrably in every one — we could not independently verify a state-by-state legal survey, so this page does not claim universal coverage. Check your own county's animal services page, which is usually the same page that publishes the clinic dates.

The public-health case is stronger than most owners expect. The 2016 JAVMA compendium argues that cats should be required to be vaccinated everywhere on the grounds that more rabid cats than dogs are reported each year in the United States — 247 cats against 89 dogs in 2013.

The compendium is also explicit that its own recommendations do not supersede state and local law. It is guidance for jurisdictions, not a rule you can cite at a clinic.

Where a licence exists, it is usually the cheaper half of the transaction and sometimes pays for the vaccine outright, as Montgomery County's free-with-licence arrangement does.

The exam fee is the largest number in this whole transaction

A vaccination clinic charges nothing for the visit itself. A practice that will not vaccinate without a current examination adds $56 to $130, per CareCredit's 2025-2026 ASQ360 figures for a routine cat visit.

That single line is bigger than any vaccine price on this page, including the $109 one. It is the reason the same shot is $10 at a county clinic and near $150 at a practice that has not seen the cat this year.

Two ways to make the exam fee worth paying rather than avoiding. Buy the FVRCP dose at the same visit — $10 at Loudoun County, $30 at Haven Humane, $43 at Covina, $49 to $58 for PetVet's PureVax version — so one consultation covers two vaccines. Or book it in a year the cat is due something else anyway.

Ask on the phone whether an exam is required and whether it is waived for a cat seen in the last twelve months. Those two questions move this bill further than any comparison of vaccine prices will.

How solid is the $109 top of this range?

It is one clinic's published price, and it should be read as the top of the observed market rather than as a typical figure. Covina Animal Hospital is the highest published feline rabies price found anywhere in this survey, and the second-highest three-year price found was Tequesta's $69.25.

Every row on this page is a fee read off a provider's own website, so nothing here is estimated or indexed. The limit is coverage rather than accuracy: a 2026 peer-reviewed survey in Frontiers in Veterinary Science found only 1.91% of US small-animal clinics publish any price online.

Municipal clinic fees also move with the clinic calendar. The Boston figures are tied to specific 2026 dates.

Treat the named rows as a floor to measure a quote against. The next feline bill worth planning for is the cat spay or neuter; if a reduced-fee practice is what you need, our low-cost vet directory lists them, and the rest of the routine costs are indexed on our vet cost index.

How each regional row was sourced
Northeast (published)
The City of Boston's low-cost clinic covers cats and dogs alike at $2 for residents 70 and over, $5 for residents and $10 for non-residents. Love City Vet in Philadelphia publishes $38. Tractor Supply PetVet publishes $40 adjuvanted and $50 non-adjuvanted PureVax in Greenfield, Massachusetts and York, Pennsylvania.
Midwest (published)
Petco Vetco publishes $39 a la carte and $36 as a package add-on for cat rabies in Chicago. Tractor Supply PetVet publishes $38 adjuvanted and $48 non-adjuvanted PureVax in Fort Wayne, Indiana and Midland, Michigan. Cook County, Illinois runs free rabies clinics but several are dog-only, and Chicago Animal Care and Control states plainly it cannot accommodate cats at its own clinics.
South (published)
Montgomery County, Maryland gives the shot free with a county pet licence and charges $4 without. Loudoun County, Virginia and Orange County, North Carolina publish $10; Fairfax County, Virginia $20; Miami-Dade County, Florida $25 standard and $10 for income-qualified residents; Humane Animal Partners in Delaware $30. Dallas Veterinary Clinic in Texas publishes $39 for one-year PureVax. Tequesta Veterinary Clinic in Florida publishes $51 for one year and $69.25 for three years, both PureVax.
West (published)
Haven Humane Society in Redding, California publishes $25 for cats and dogs. Midvalley Animal Clinic in Utah publishes $29. Tractor Supply PetVet publishes $40-$42 adjuvanted and $50-$52 PureVax in Arizona and California. Covina Animal Hospital in California publishes $45 for one-year PureVax and $109 for three-year PureVax - the highest published feline rabies price found anywhere in this survey.
Non-adjuvanted (PureVax) against adjuvanted, same clinic (published)
Tractor Supply PetVet charges $35-$42 for the adjuvanted vaccine and $45-$52 for PureVax at the same ten clinics - a flat $10 premium wherever you go, and $39 flat if you buy either as a package add-on. Covina Animal Hospital charges $38.50 for its general rabies vaccine, $45 for one-year PureVax and $109 for three-year PureVax.
City of Boston, Massachusetts (published)
$2 for residents 70 and over, $5 for residents, $10 for non-residents, at a clinic that vaccinates cats as well as dogs. A three-year vaccine is given at the same price with proof of previous vaccination.
Tractor Supply PetVet clinics, 10 locations surveyed (published)
Adjuvanted a la carte $35 in East Ellijay, Georgia to $42 in California; PureVax a la carte $45 to $52 over the same locations. Package add-on prices were flat nationwide at $31 adjuvanted and $39 PureVax, so the bundling discount is worth more in expensive markets.

What changes the price

Two invoices for the same procedure diverge for a small number of reasons. These are the ones that move the total most.

Adjuvanted or non-adjuvanted (PureVax)
A flat $10 premium at every Tractor Supply PetVet location checked, and $38.50 against $45 at Covina Animal Hospital. Cornell's Feline Health Center records that adjuvants were implicated as a possible cause of feline injection-site sarcomas, and that the non-adjuvanted line now offers a three-year formulation where earlier non-adjuvanted products only lasted one year. Some practices, such as Tequesta Veterinary Clinic in Florida, state on their price list that they stock non-adjuvanted vaccines exclusively
One-year versus three-year formulation
Covina Animal Hospital publishes $45 for one-year PureVax and $109 for three-year PureVax - 2.4x the price for 3x the cover, so the three-year product is cheaper per year but only if the cat is already through its first booster. Tequesta publishes $51 against $69.25 for the same choice, where the three-year is cheaper per year by a wider margin
It is the cat's first rabies shot
The 2016 JAVMA rabies compendium requires a booster one year after the first dose regardless of the formulation used, so buying the three-year product for a kitten's first vaccine buys nothing in year one
Municipal clinic versus private practice
$2-$25 at a county or city clinic against $38.50-$109 in private practice - a 50x spread on a legally required shot. Cat owners have fewer municipal options than dog owners: Chicago Animal Care and Control's free clinics take dogs only
Residency, age and income tests
Boston charges $2 at 70 and over, $5 for residents and $10 for non-residents; Miami-Dade charges $25 or $10 for income-qualified residents; Montgomery County, Maryland charges $0 with a licence
Whether an exam is required first
Vaccination clinics charge no exam fee; a private practice that will not vaccinate without a current exam adds $56-$130 on top of the vaccine

Does pet insurance cover cat rabies vaccination?

Cat Rabies Vaccination is normally not covered by a standard accident-and-illness policy. Rabies vaccination is preventive care and is excluded from every standard accident-and-illness policy; only an optional preventive-care or wellness add-on reimburses it. The economics are worse for cats than dogs at the low end - a Boston resident pays $2 - and better at the high end, since a $109 three-year PureVax is one of the larger single preventive-care line items a cat generates.

What you would get back: Nothing under a base plan. Preventive-care add-ons reimburse actual cost against a fixed annual routine-care allowance.

Coverage rules differ enough between carriers that the only useful answer is a side-by-side: our pet insurance comparison for cat rabies vaccination shows which policies pay for it, what the waiting period is, and what counts as pre-existing.

Why a pet needs cat rabies vaccination

The pages below are the reasons this bill happens. Each one carries the same price data you are reading, in the context of the problem that produces it.

Preventive care that avoids this bill

  • feline rabies vaccinePaying for the three-year non-adjuvanted product at a kitten's first visit: One year of licensed cover, because the one-year booster is due regardless of formulation
  • cheap rabies shot for dogs A cheap rabies shot for a dog costs $2 to $43.
  • how much shots for puppies Puppy shots cost $40 to $475 for the whole series — three visits, not three shots.
  • how much are cat shots Cat shots cost $40 to $502 for the full kitten series, and the indoor-or-outdoor decision swings it 117% at one clinic.
  • bordetella shot cost A bordetella shot costs $15 to $56 per dose, and the injectable needs two doses in a naive dog: an $8 sticker premium that is really $56 to $72 in year one..
  • dhpp vaccine cost A DHPP vaccine costs $10 to $60 per dose, and a puppy needs at least three of them.

Every procedure we have priced is listed on the vet cost index.
