Cat Surgery Cost in 2026: $350 to $6,282
A cat surgery costs $350 to $6,282 in the United States, and $1,050 is the typical price. Regionally the typical price runs from $528 in Richmond, Virginia to $1,700 in Minneapolis, Minnesota — a 3.2x spread for the same procedure.

Five practices publish a full feline price list and they disagree 3.2x
Cat surgery costs are usually presented as one national band per operation. The more useful comparison is five American practices that publish their entire feline fee schedule, whose medians run from $528 to $1,700 for the same body of work:
- $528 median at Helping Hands in Richmond, Virginia — anesthesia and take-home medication included.
- $800 median at Shore Pet Surgery in Grasonville, Maryland.
- $900 median at Affordable Veterinary Surgery in North Carolina.
- $1,517 median at Veterinary Surgical Solutions in Austin, a board-certified referral practice.
- $1,700 median at Access Veterinary Care in Minneapolis.
The same operation, priced at five practices
The spread is not an artefact of different case mixes. It holds operation by operation:
- Enucleation (eye removal): $415 per eye at Shore Pet Surgery, $480 at Helping Hands, $850 in North Carolina, $1,100 in Minneapolis, $1,260 to $1,400 in Austin.
- Pyometra: $350 at Shore Pet Surgery, $580 at Helping Hands, $1,100 in North Carolina, $1,600 in Minneapolis.
- Perineal urethrostomy: $995 at Shore Pet Surgery, $1,475 at Helping Hands, $1,519 to $1,663 in Austin, $1,750 in North Carolina.
- Leg amputation: $595 at Helping Hands, $610 at Shore Pet Surgery, $900 in North Carolina, $1,800 to $2,100 in Minneapolis — against $735 to $6,800 for the same operation on a dog, which our dog leg amputation cost page bands by weight.
- Ear hematoma: $350 for a cat at Shore Pet Surgery, against $690 for a dog on the same fee sheet. The dog ear hematoma surgery cost page explains what that 2x species gap is actually buying.
A cat pyometra is 4.6x more expensive in Minneapolis than in Maryland. No regional adjustment in our dataset is anywhere near that large, which means the gap is a practice-model difference, not geography.
The practical instruction is unglamorous: ring three practices and ask for the price of the named operation, not for "the cost of cat surgery." Our low-cost vet directory lists clinics that publish their prices in nine US cities.
A cat costs less than a dog, but far less than size suggests
CareCredit publishes paired feline and canine figures in the same tables, and the ratio is nothing like the weight ratio.
An intestinal blockage surgery is $2,367 for a cat against $4,383 for a dog. A night in hospital is $582 against $619. A CBC is $79 against $104. An abdominal ultrasound is $323 against $483.
Anaesthetic drug volume scales with body weight. Monitoring time, theatre time, surgeon time and staffing do not. That is why a 10 lb cat is not a tenth of the price of a 100 lb dog, and why cat owners are routinely surprised by an estimate.
Oxygen is the largest line on a feline emergency invoice
CareCredit's national average for oxygen therapy is $1,861 per visit for a cat — higher than the $1,528 it reports for a large dog, and higher than the published price of almost every operation listed above.
It is also the line no owner anticipates, because it is not a procedure. It is a cat in an oxygen cage while the team works out what is wrong.
If a cat arrives in respiratory distress, that figure lands before the exam, the imaging or the surgery. It is the single strongest argument for pricing the emergency scenario rather than the elective one when deciding what to insure.
Emergency admission is the other multiplier
An emergency examination for a cat runs $113 to $260 on CareCredit's national range, at a $143 average, before anything is done. A hospital day is $461 to $1,059.
The same operation moves with the door. CareCredit's published emergency bladder stone surgery figure for cats is $1,660 to $3,814, against $2,096 for the same removal on its non-emergency table.
Scheduling is the discount nobody frames as one. Where a condition can safely wait for a booked slot at a surgical practice, waiting is worth several hundred to a few thousand dollars — and where it cannot, the emergency premium is the price of the cat living.
What does the workup cost before a cat's surgery?
It depends entirely on how much imaging the diagnosis needs, and it is billed whether or not you proceed. On a cheap operation the workup can exceed the surgery.
CareCredit's feline national averages are the components: a CBC at $79, a chemistry panel at $144, an emergency two-to-three-view radiograph series at $310, an abdominal ultrasound at $323, a urine culture at $94, and an IV catheter with fluids at $121. Bloodwork alone is $223; add imaging and it passes $850.
Ultrasound is the line worth understanding before you consent to it, because it is the one most often repeated — our cat ultrasound cost page covers what it does and does not settle.
The cheap operations are the ones you pay for yourself
This is the inversion most cat owners get wrong. A feline spay runs $85 to $500 and a neuter $75 to $280 across the published price lists, and neither is covered by an accident-and-illness policy — they are elective, and they need a wellness add-on.
Everything more expensive on those same lists is covered: the pyometra, the urethrostomy, the enucleation, the foreign body. The bills that are insurable are the ones you cannot plan for, which is what insurance is for and also why the cheapest line on a fee sheet is the one that reaches your own pocket.
Our cat spay and neuter cost page prices the elective side, including the subsidised clinic tier that a full-service hospital does not compete with.
The lines that repeat on every feline surgical invoice
Whatever the operation, the same handful of lines appear, and on CareCredit's feline national averages they total several hundred dollars before the surgeon starts:
- Injectable sedation: $123
- IV catheter and fluids: $121
- General anesthesia and monitoring: $200 to $600, bundled into the surgical fee on every published feline price list we read
- Take-home pain relief and antibiotics: $29 to $300
The fact that anesthesia is bundled almost everywhere is why practice-level prices are comparable at all — and why a quote that itemises it separately should be read carefully rather than assumed to be padded.
Where the numbers on this page come from
The $1,050 typical figure is the median of 21 individual published feline surgical prices: nine from Shore Pet Surgery's fee list, eight from Access Veterinary Care's and four from CareCredit's feline treatment table.
That is a median of published prices, not a survey-weighted national average. No survey of feline surgery as a category exists in the United States, and we would rather say so than dress a median up as one.
Three further published feline lists were added after that median was computed — Helping Hands, Affordable Veterinary Surgery and Veterinary Surgical Solutions. They widen the practice-to-practice spread from 2.1x to 3.2x, and we left the typical where the original 21 prices put it rather than recomputing on a set chosen for convenience.
Which cat surgeries cost the most?
At the top of our verified feline data sits a cranial cruciate ligament repair, where CareCredit's band reaches $6,282 — an operation cats need far less often than dogs, and one of the few feline procedures priced like canine orthopaedics.
Below that, the referral practice in Austin publishes a foreign body obstruction up to $2,667, a femoral head ostectomy at $1,517 to $1,611 and a medial patellar luxation at $1,370 to $1,535.
Not every four-figure feline bill is surgical, though, and the largest lifetime ones usually are not. A chronic condition like feline hyperthyroidism is priced by the year rather than by the event, which changes the arithmetic completely. Everything we have priced is on the vet cost index.

The median of that list is about $1,700 - more than double the Maryland practice for the same operations.
- Richmond, Virginia (published)
- Helping Hands Veterinary Surgery publishes a feline list with anesthesia and take-home medication included: neuter $78, spay $150, enucleation $480, dental with extractions $475, pyometra $580, leg amputation $595, perineal urethrostomy $1,475, nephrectomy $1,675. The median of that list is about $528 - the cheapest published feline surgical practice we found.
- North Carolina (published)
- Affordable Veterinary Surgery publishes feline neuter $200, spay $400, thyroidectomy $800, enucleation $850 unilateral, femoral head ostectomy $1,000, pyometra $1,100 and perineal urethrostomy $1,750, all with anesthesia, induction, injectable medication and full monitoring included in the base price.
- Austin, Texas (specialty referral) (published)
- Veterinary Surgical Solutions, a board-certified referral practice, publishes feline prices two to three times the low-cost lists: enucleation $1,260-$1,400, cat lateral suture cruciate repair $1,300-$1,400, cat medial patellar luxation $1,370-$1,535, cat femoral head ostectomy $1,517-$1,611, perineal urethrostomy $1,519-$1,663 and foreign body obstruction up to $2,667 for cats.
What changes the price
Two invoices for the same procedure diverge for a small number of reasons. These are the ones that move the total most.
- Which practice, not which operation
- The widest gap in this dataset. Five practices publish a full feline surgical list and their medians run $528 (Richmond, Virginia), $800 (Grasonville, Maryland), $900 (North Carolina), $1,517 (Austin specialty referral) and $1,700 (Minneapolis). A cat enucleation is $415 at one and $1,400 at another; a cat pyometra is $350 at one and $1,600 at another. Shopping the practice moves the price more than shopping the operation
- Emergency versus scheduled
- An emergency exam adds $113-$260 before anything is done, and CareCredit prices a cat's hospital day at $461-$1,059. Its published emergency bladder stone surgery figure for cats is $1,660-$3,814 against $2,096 for the same removal on its non-emergency table
- Whether the cat needs oxygen
- The single largest line item on a feline emergency invoice, and one owners never anticipate: CareCredit's national average for oxygen therapy is $1,861 per visit for a cat - higher than the $1,528 it reports for a large dog, and more than most cat operations cost
- Cats are cheaper than dogs for the same operation, but not by as much as size suggests
- CareCredit's paired tables put a cat's intestinal blockage surgery at $2,367 against $4,383 for a dog, a cat's hospital night at $582 against $619, and a cat's CBC at $79 against $104. Anaesthetic drug volume scales with weight; monitoring time, theatre time and staffing do not
- How much diagnostics the surgery needs first
- Radiographs at $310 for an emergency series, ultrasound at $323, bloodwork at $79-$144 per panel and a urine culture at $94. On a cheap operation the workup can cost more than the surgery
- Elective versus illness
- A spay is $85-$500 and a neuter $75-$280 across the two published feline price lists, and neither is covered by insurance. Everything else on those lists is, which inverts the usual assumption that the cheap things are the ones you pay for yourself
What the itemized invoice looks like
Clinics quote a bundled number and itemize afterwards. This is the decomposition, so you can read a real estimate line by line before you sign it.
| Line item | Low | High |
|---|---|---|
| Examination or emergency exam CareCredit national average $143 for a cat emergency exam, range $113-$260 | $113 | $260 |
| Pre-anaesthetic bloodwork (CBC and chemistry panel) CareCredit national averages for cats: CBC $79, chemistry panel $144 | $60 | $240 |
| Radiographs CareCredit national average $310 for an emergency two-to-three-view series in a cat | $200 | $400 |
| Abdominal ultrasound CareCredit national average $323 for a cat, against $483 for a dog measured in the same table | $250 | $500 |
| Urine culture CareCredit national average $94 for a cat | $78 | $150 |
| IV catheter and fluids CareCredit national average $121 for a cat | $110 | $180 |
| Injectable sedation CareCredit national average $123 for a cat | $100 | $200 |
| General anesthesia and monitoring Bundled into the surgical fee on both published feline price lists; estimated where billed separately | $200 | $600 |
| The surgical procedure Published feline prices range from $350 (pyometra or ear hematoma, Shore Pet Surgery) to $6,282 (the top of CareCredit's cranial cruciate ligament band for cats). The median of 21 published feline surgical prices across three sources is about $1,050 | $350 | $6,282 |
| Oxygen therapy, per visit CareCredit national average $1,861 for a cat, higher than the $1,528 it reports for a large dog | $1,000 | $1,861 |
| Hospitalisation, per day CareCredit national averages for cats: $582 per night at a veterinary clinic, published range $461-$1,059 | $461 | $1,059 |
| Take-home pain relief and antibiotics | $29 | $300 |
Not every line appears on every invoice — practices bundle differently, and some of these are only billed when the procedure turns up something. Sourcing for each figure is in Sources.
Does pet insurance cover cat surgery?
Cat Surgery is normally covered by a standard accident-and-illness policy. Coverage for cats splits the same way it does for dogs: illness and accident surgery is covered by a standard accident-and-illness policy once the waiting period has passed and the condition was not pre-existing; spay, neuter and elective dental work are not, and need a wellness add-on. CareCredit publishes what the two tiers cost for a cat: $29-$66 a month for accident and illness, $8-$18 for accident-only and $14-$33 for wellness. The cat-specific risk is that feline illnesses arrive as a cluster - urinary blockage, hyperthyroidism, dental disease - so a claim declined as pre-existing on one of them tends to contaminate later claims on the same body system.
What you would get back: 70-90% of the covered bill after an annual deductible of roughly $250-$500. Wellness add-ons reimburse a flat scheduled amount instead of a percentage.
Coverage rules differ enough between carriers that the only useful answer is a side-by-side: our pet insurance comparison for cat surgery shows which policies pay for it, what the waiting period is, and what counts as pre-existing.
