You are paying for the appointment slot, not for different medicine

Six clinics publish a routine exam fee and an urgent care fee side by side, and the premium for being seen today runs from 31% to 100%. Rocket City Mobile Vet in Huntsville charges $65 and $85. Midvalley Animal Clinic in Utah charges $75 and $150 — exactly double, the widest published gap we found.

The three in between fill out the curve: Covina Animal Hospital in California $90 to $120, Love City Vet in Philadelphia $78 to $114, Kenmore Veterinary Hospital in Washington $92 to $149, and Cane Bay Veterinary Clinic in South Carolina $74 to $124.

Nothing in those schedules describes a different examination. It is the same practice, usually the same veterinarian, and the surcharge buys a slot that was not on the calendar this morning.

That is a defensible thing to charge for and a useful thing to know you are buying. If the problem can wait until Thursday, the identical appointment is the routine vet check up price instead.

Is urgent care cheaper than an emergency vet?

Yes, but by less than most owners expect: $35 at both practices that publish all three tiers. Cane Bay Veterinary Clinic posts $124 urgent against $159 emergency. Covina Animal Hospital posts $120 against $155. The step from routine to urgent at those same two clinics is $50 and $30.

Measured against the national emergency-room average the saving looks similar. CareCredit's 2025–2026 study puts the ER exam at $135 for dogs and $143 for cats, which is inside the $85 to $150 urgent-care band rather than far above it.

The ER's range is what differs. The dog emergency exam runs $107 to $246 and the cat exam $113 to $260, from $108 in Mississippi to $241 in Hawaii, against a much tighter urgent-care spread.

Geography moves the ER number in a way it does not visibly move urgent care. The dog emergency exam medians by census region are $146 in the Northeast, $137 in the West and $120 in both the South and the Midwest.

Whether urgent care follows the same curve is unknown, because seven posted fees across seven states cannot answer it. Assume it does, and treat the national band on this page as the shape rather than your quote.

So the exam-fee saving is real and small. What urgent care actually saves is the emergency room's clock and its diagnostic default, not $100 on the door charge.

The exam fee is the smallest line on the bill

Animal Urgent Center in Ann Arbor publishes its whole diagnostic menu next to its $125 visit fee, and every item on it can outprice the visit. A complete blood count is $114, a chemistry panel $189, a urinalysis $125 and $170 if the sample has to be collected by cystocentesis.

Imaging is the steep one. A three-view thoracic radiograph series is $302 at the same clinic; Covina Animal Hospital publishes $240 for radiographs plus $190 for a board-certified radiologist to read them.

Bloodwork scales with how wide the panel is rather than with the urgency. The $114 complete blood count at Ann Arbor sits at one end; Dallas Veterinary Clinic's comprehensive panel with thyroid is $179 and Cane Bay's early-detection panel is $207.

Radiographs price by the number of views, which is decided after you arrive. A single digital view is $110 at Dallas Veterinary Clinic against Ann Arbor's $302 for three.

Even the cheap tests are not cheap relative to the door charge. Ear cytology is $102 at Ann Arbor; Dallas Veterinary Clinic prices cytology from $45 including slide preparation and interpretation.

Which means the number you should ask about on the phone is not the exam fee. It is what the clinic expects to run, and what each of those costs.

What counts as urgent is decided by the clinic, not by you

The seven practices define the category themselves and they do not agree. Cane Bay's own wording is for problems that cannot wait, such as ear infections or vomiting. Kenmore describes sick patient exams booked outside its regular schedule. Midvalley offers no urgent appointment at all and handles each case as it comes.

The consequence is a pricing quirk worth knowing. The same complaint can be a $74 sick visit or a $124 urgent one at Cane Bay depending on whether a regular slot happens to be free.

So the question that changes your bill is not what is wrong with the animal. It is whether the practice can fit you into a normal appointment today, and it costs nothing to ask for that before accepting the urgent slot.

When the answer is that nothing can wait — a bloated abdomen, a cat straining in the litter box, a pyometra — the price ladder stops mattering and the timing does. Dog pyometra surgery costs show what an after-hours version of the same decision looks like.

Which carriers will not pay an urgent care exam fee?

Five of the 17 carriers whose policy documents we hold exclude the examination fee from their base plan, which lands squarely on the number this page is about. Trupanion and State Farm both list exam fees, including specialist and emergency exam fees, among their exclusions.

Healthy Paws covers everything but the exam fee. Figo and Lemonade sell exam-fee coverage as a paid add-on rather than including it in the base policy.

Everything else about an urgent visit for a genuine illness or injury is a normal accident-and-illness claim, subject to the deductible, the reimbursement percentage and any waiting period. The bloodwork, the imaging and the medications are claimable in the ordinary way.

The $85 to $150 that brought you through the door may simply not be. That is worth checking against your own policy before you assume the visit is covered, because it is the one line the carriers word most specifically.

How reliable are these urgent care prices?

This is the thinnest record on the site, and honestly so. Two of the four census regions rest on a single clinic each — the Northeast on Love City Vet in Philadelphia and the Midwest on Animal Urgent Center in Ann Arbor. Read those two rows as one data point apiece, not as regional averages.

No survey prices this category. Veterinary urgent care barely existed as a distinct service before 2020, and the Adams study in Frontiers in Veterinary Science found only 1.91% of US small-animal clinics publish any price online at all, so seven posted fees is close to the entire public universe for it.

Two rows in the price table below are not urgent-care prices. The routine-exam row and the emergency-room row are comparison brackets, included because the whole definition of this category is that it sits between them.

What the record does have going for it is that every urgent-care figure on it is a published price rather than an estimate. There are no modelled rows here — just very few real ones.

What to ask before you accept an urgent care slot

Four questions, in the order they save money. Can this be booked as a regular sick appointment today instead? What diagnostics do you expect to run, and what does each cost? Is the exam fee separate from the treatment? And what would you charge for the same visit tomorrow?

The first and the last are the same question asked twice, and at Cane Bay the answer is a $50 difference on a $74 base.

For anything that genuinely is routine, the cheaper path is a different building entirely — our directory of low-cost vet clinics publishes posted fee schedules and eligibility rules city by city, and several of those clinics see same-day sick patients at their standard exam fee.

What changes the price

Two invoices for the same procedure diverge for a small number of reasons. These are the ones that move the total most.

Urgent care against the emergency room
The whole reason this category exists. Cane Bay Veterinary Clinic publishes $124 urgent against $159 emergency; Covina Animal Hospital publishes $120 against $155. A $35 saving at both, before any diagnostics - and against the $135 national ER average the saving is real but smaller than most owners expect
Urgent care against the same clinic's own routine exam
$65 to $85 at Rocket City Mobile Vet (+31%), $90 to $120 at Covina Animal Hospital (+33%), $78 to $114 at Love City Vet (+46%), $74 to $124 at Cane Bay (+68%), $92 to $149 at Kenmore (+62%), $75 to $150 at Midvalley (+100%). You are buying the appointment slot, not different medicine
The exam fee is the smallest line on the bill
Animal Urgent Center in Ann Arbor publishes its whole menu: complete blood count $114, chemistry panel $189, urinalysis $125 rising to $170 if collected by cystocentesis, three-view thoracic radiographs $302, ear cytology $102. Any single one of those can cost more than the visit that triggered it
Geography
The ER exam - the closest thing to a nationally surveyed proxy for urgent care - runs from $108 in Mississippi to $241 in Hawaii, the same 2.2x state spread the routine exam shows (CareCredit/ASQ360 2025-2026)
Whether the practice offers urgent care at all
Most do not, and almost none publish the fee. A peer-reviewed 2026 study in Frontiers in Veterinary Science found only 3 of 157 US small-animal clinics with websites (1.91%) published any pricing at all, so the seven fee schedules on this page are close to the entire published universe for this service
What counts as urgent
The clinics define it themselves. Cane Bay's own wording is 'for problems that can't wait, such as ear infections or vomiting'; Kenmore's is 'sick patient exams booked outside of our regular schedule'; Midvalley offers no appointment at all and handles it case by case. The same complaint can be a $74 sick visit or a $124 urgent one depending on whether the practice has a slot

Emergency rooms are not recommended for non-emergency medical problems in human hospitals. I feel this should be the same for veterinary hospitals. Even though some health issues may not be life-threatening, they are still considered emergencies. Does pet insurance cover veterinary urgent care visit?

Veterinary Urgent Care Visit is normally covered by a standard accident-and-illness policy. Unlike a wellness visit, an urgent care visit for an actual illness or injury is a normal illness claim under a standard accident-and-illness policy - subject to the annual deductible, the reimbursement percentage, any waiting period and any pre-existing-condition exclusion. The catch sits precisely on the number this page is about: several carriers exclude the examination fee itself while paying for everything done during the visit. Trupanion and State Farm both list examination fees, including specialist and emergency exam fees, among their exclusions; Healthy Paws covers everything but the exam fee; Figo sells exam-fee coverage as a paid add-on rather than including it in the base plan. So the $85-$150 that brought you through the door may be the one line your policy will not touch.

What you would get back: 70-90% of the covered portion after the annual deductible on a standard accident-and-illness plan. The exam fee itself is excluded by several major carriers, so expect reimbursement on the diagnostics and treatment rather than on the visit fee.

Coverage rules differ enough between carriers that the only useful answer is a side-by-side: our pet insurance comparison for veterinary urgent care visit shows which policies pay for it, what the waiting period is, and what counts as pre-existing.

Why a pet needs veterinary urgent care visit

The pages below are the reasons this bill happens. Each one carries the same price data you are reading, in the context of the problem that produces it.

Conditions treated with veterinary urgent care visit

  • cat coughing Can be an emergency A cough in a cat is a lower-airway problem until proved otherwise, and the commonest cause is asthma - an allergic narrowing of the small airways that Cornell puts at 1 to 5% of cats.
  • dehydrated dog treatment Can be an emergency Dehydration is not a disease, it is the measurable consequence of one, and the numbers behind it are published rather than guessed.
  • dog colitis medication Can be an emergency Inflammation of the colon, which shows up as small, frequent, urgent stools carrying mucus and often fresh red blood, with straining.
  • dog coughing Can be an emergency A cough is a sign, not a diagnosis, and the same dry hack can come from an infection that clears itself in two weeks or from a failing heart valve.
  • dog dementia treatment Can be an emergency An age-related degenerative brain disease that Cornell describes as causing deterioration similar to Alzheimer's disease in people, with beta-amyloid accumulating and neurons dying.
  • dog diabetic symptoms Can be an emergency The pancreas stops making enough insulin, so glucose stays in the blood instead of feeding the cells, spills into the urine and drags water with it.
  • dog diarrhea Can be an emergency Loose or watery stool, with or without blood, and the sixth most frequently recorded disorder in dogs in primary practice.
  • dog ear infection treatment Can be an emergency Inflammation of the ear canal, almost always with a yeast or bacterial overgrowth on top of it.
  • dog eye allergies Can be an emergency A red, weeping, itchy eye is what owners call an eye allergy, and environmental irritants and allergens genuinely are, in Merck's words, common causes of conjunctivitis in all species.
  • dog limping Can be an emergency Limping means something painful is interfering with the normal use of a limb, and Cornell's framing is that it deserves veterinary attention rather than a wait-and-see.
  • dog pregnancy symptoms Can be an emergency The signs owners read as pregnancy - weight gain, a swollen belly, mammary enlargement, milk, nesting behaviour - are produced just as reliably by a false pregnancy, and there is no home test that tells them apart.
  • dog seizures Can be an emergency A burst of abnormal electrical activity in the brain, which in its classic form drops the dog on its side with stiff, paddling limbs, frothing, loss of consciousness and often loss of bladder and bowel control.
  • dog skin yeast infection Can need a same-day visit Malassezia yeast lives on normal dog skin and only causes disease when something changes the skin it lives on.
  • dog UTI symptoms Can be an emergency A bacterial infection of the bladder, usually Escherichia coli travelling up the urethra from the perineum.
  • dog vomiting and diarrhea Can be an emergency Sudden vomiting, usually with diarrhoea, from an inflamed stomach and intestine.
  • dog vomiting blood Can be an emergency Blood in a dog's vomit - fresh red, dark clots, or the brown grit that looks like coffee grounds because the stomach has already digested it.
  • dog vomiting yellow Can be an emergency Yellow vomit is bile that has refluxed from the duodenum back into an empty stomach, and it is a description rather than a diagnosis.
  • dog wound treatment Can be an emergency Cleaning and closing a wound is mostly a timing decision, and the two things owners get wrong are both correctable in the first hour.
  • hip dysplasia in dogs Can be an emergency An inherited malformation in which the hip joint is too loose, so the ball grinds in the socket and arthritis follows.
  • ivdd in dogs Can be an emergency A disc between the vertebrae ruptures or bulges and presses on the spinal cord, causing pain, wobbliness or paralysis.
  • kennel cough in dogs Can be an emergency A contagious inflammation of the windpipe and airways caused by a mix of viruses and bacteria, not by one organism.
  • kidney disease in cat symptoms Can be an emergency The kidneys lose function slowly and permanently, and the cruel arithmetic is that they hide it until most of them are gone.
  • parvo in dogs Can be an emergency A virus that destroys the lining of a puppy's intestine and the bone marrow that makes its white blood cells, producing vomiting and bloody diarrhoea that can kill in days.
  • signs and symptoms of cat diabetes Can be an emergency A disease in which the cat's cells stop responding properly to insulin, so glucose stays in the blood instead of feeding the body.
  • staph infection in puppies Can be an emergency Crusty pustules on a puppy's hairless belly and groin, caused by the dog's own resident bacterium overgrowing.
  • urinary blockage cat Can be an emergency A group of conditions causing painful, frequent, bloody or unproductive urination in cats.
  • why is my cat meowing so much Can be an emergency Excessive meowing is a sign, not a disease, and it is the sign this dataset can be most useful about — because its differentials range from a cat that has learned meowing produces breakfast to a male cat that cannot pass urine and will die within about two days without treatment.
  • worm cat symptoms Can be an emergency Worms in cats are usually silent, and the signs owners are told to look for - a dull coat, a potbelly, vomiting, diarrhoea - are the same signs as a dozen other things.

Foods that end in this bill

  • can dog have onion Toxic The sulfur-containing oxidants in Allium species are released by mechanical disruption - chopping, cooking, chewing - and by gut microbes acting on the material.
  • can dogs eat grapes Toxic Tartaric acid is an organic acid present in high concentrations in grapes, raisins and tamarinds.
  • can dogs eat marshmallows Safe in limits The risk in a marshmallow is not the marshmallow.
  • can dogs eat mushrooms Toxic There is no such thing as 'a mushroom' for this question, and that is the whole answer.
  • chocolate dog poison symptoms Toxic Theobromine and caffeine block the adenosine receptors that normally damp down nerve and heart activity, and they raise intracellular calcium so heart and skeletal muscle contract harder.
  • xylitol poisoning in dogs Toxic In most mammals xylitol has no notable effect on insulin.

Preventive care that avoids this bill

  • bland food dogFeeding chicken and rice for a week to a dog that keeps vomiting: A same-day assessment for a dog that has been quietly dehydrating, before anything is actually treated
  • bordetella vaccine dogLetting a puppy's cough run because kennel cough is 'self-limiting': Bronchopneumonia in a young dog, which is an urgent visit and chest radiographs rather than rest
  • cat distemper shotStopping the kitten series before 16 weeks because the kitten seems healthy: A kitten whose doses may all have landed inside the maternal-antibody window, seen as an emergency if panleukopenia follows
  • deworming cats medicineDeworming a kitten at home instead of having a faecal test run: The wrong drug for the parasite present, and a young cat presented later with anaemia or poor growth as an urgent case
  • dhpp dog vaccineStopping the puppy series at 12 weeks because the puppy has 'already had its shots': A course that may have landed every dose inside the maternal-antibody window, and a sick puppy seen as an emergency before anything is treated
  • kitten flea careSplitting a dog flea product, or using one on a cat: A poisoning that presents as tremors or seizures and is treated as an emergency
  • low fat dog food pancreatitisManaging a suspected pancreatitis flare at home on a low-fat food: A same-day assessment for a dog that needed fluids and pain relief rather than a change of bag
  • low sodium diet dog foodManaging a coughing, fast-breathing dog at home as a heart-diet problem: The same-day assessment that separates heart failure from airway disease before either is treated
  • puppy vaccination calendarStopping the series at 12 weeks because the puppy 'has had its shots': A course that may have landed entirely inside the maternal-antibody window, and an emergency visit for a puppy the owner believed was covered
  • taurine cat food supplementTreating a cat's laboured breathing or sudden weakness as a nutrition problem: The emergency assessment a cat in heart failure needs, which no supplement can buy back
  • tick on dogUsing tick products seasonally, or only after finding a tick: Repeat infestations and the sick visit that a tick-borne infection turns into — fever, lameness or lethargy worked up as an urgent case
