Dog Root Canal Cost in 2026: $700 to $3,750

A dog root canal costs $700 to $3,750 in the United States, and $3,200 is the typical price. Regionally the typical price runs from $2,820 in the Midwest to $4,280 in California — a 1.5x spread for the same procedure.

Board-certified veterinary dentist versus a general dental practice — $700 as a published starting price at a general dental practice (Pet Dental USA, Arizona) against $3,500-$5,000 at a board-certified specialty hospital (OakVet Animal Specialty Hospital, Oakland, California) and $4,000-$4,500 at a veterinary dental centre (Aggie Animal Dental Center, Mill Valley, California) - a 5x to 6x gap for the same named procedure
Covered by pet insurance
Usually, under an accident-and-illness policy. 70-90% of the covered bill after the deductible, subject to any annual dental sub-limit. On a $3,500 specialty root canal that is the difference between paying $350 and paying the whole thing.

The decision this price is attached to

Nobody shops for a root canal. The choice arrives as a fractured tooth with exposed pulp and two treatment plans: endodontic treatment that keeps the tooth in the jaw, or extraction that removes it. Both fix the pain. One costs several times the other.

Mechanically the two are opposites. A root canal removes the pulp, disinfects the canal and fills it, leaving the crown in the jaw and the bite intact; an extraction takes the whole tooth, root and all, and closes the gum over the socket.

That is the whole page. Everything below is the arithmetic and the honesty about how thin the arithmetic's inputs are.

Three US practices publish a root-canal price at all, and two of them are in California — the most expensive state on every table we have checked. The $3,200 national typical here was de-indexed down from those Californian figures rather than quoted as a national number, which is why it sits so close to the $3,750 high.

What the 3x to 5x multiplier is actually comparing

Not tooth against tooth. Compared per tooth, a complex extraction at CareCredit's $130 national average against a $3,200 root canal is a 25x gap, and that comparison is useless because neither procedure happens on its own.

The fair comparison is visit against visit. Our dog teeth extraction cost page composes the whole anesthetic event from published national averages: about $644 for a cleaning, full-mouth radiographs and one simple extraction, and about $982 when four teeth come out and two of them are surgical.

Set those against the $3,200 typical root canal and the multiplier lands between 3.3x and 5x. That is the number worth carrying into the consultation, and it is a real gap — roughly $2,200 to $2,550 of additional cost to keep one tooth.

What the extra money buys is function. A dog that loses a canine tooth or a maxillary fourth premolar loses the tooth it grips and shears with, which matters more in a working or protection dog than in a nine-year-old couch dog with one fractured incisor.

Why that multiplier collapses the moment you are referred

At a specialty hospital the two plans cost almost the same. Colorado State University's veterinary teaching hospital publishes its minimums: extractions start at $2,678 and a root canal starts at $3,090 — a 1.15x gap, not a 5x one.

The reason is in what those minimums include. CSU's figures cover lab work, anesthesia, a CBCT and full-mouth imaging package, the teeth cleaning, take-home medication and recovery, with a dedicated anesthesia team member assigned to the patient. The anesthetic event dominates the bill, and it is the same event either way.

So the extract-or-save question is really two questions, and the money sits in the first one. Where the work happens sets the price class. What is done to the tooth moves it by a few hundred dollars inside that class.

An owner already sitting in a board-certified dental practice, having paid the $225 consultation at Aggie or CSU's $237, is choosing between $2,678 and $3,090. An owner in general practice is choosing between roughly $650 and a referral. Those are different decisions wearing the same words.

How thin is this price data, honestly

Thinner than anything else we publish. There is no survey of US root-canal prices, so this record is built from three published practice prices and a geographic index, and every regional row below is labelled indexed rather than published for that reason.

The $700 low deserves a specific warning: it is one Arizona practice's published starting price, not a typical bill. Pet Dental USA lists root canal therapy from $700, while OakVet Animal Specialty Hospital in Oakland quotes $3,500 to $5,000 and Aggie Animal Dental Center in Mill Valley quotes $4,000 to $4,500 for a fractured tooth.

Virtually every root canal in a dog is performed by a board-certified veterinary dentist, which is why the typical sits near the top of the range rather than in the middle of it. A reader who budgets from the low end will be wrong far more often than a reader who budgets from the typical.

One source was deliberately left out. A Canadian dental referral practice publishes a fuller endodontic fee schedule, but its prices are in Canadian dollars including sales tax, and converting them would invent precision the source does not have.

When is a root canal not an option for a dog?

When the fracture runs below the gumline. Aggie Animal Dental Center is unambiguous: "RCT is not a good option for fractures that extend below the gumline; extraction is recommended for these teeth."

That call is made from the radiographs, which means it can be made after your dog is already anesthetized on a root-canal estimate. The plan can convert to an extraction mid-procedure, and the invoice converts with it.

Ask for both numbers before the consent form is signed. A practice that has looked at a conscious mouth can tell you what each plan costs; it cannot tell you which one it will be doing.

Tooth anatomy moves the price inside the root-canal plan too. A canine tooth has one root; the maxillary fourth premolar has three, and each root is a separate canal to clean, disinfect and fill under anesthesia.

What happens if a dog's root canal fails?

You pay again, at close to the original price. Aggie Animal Dental Center prices re-treatment at $2,500 to $3,000 to extract the tooth, or $3,500 to $4,000 for surgical root canal treatment, with follow-up imaging on top.

There is a second, later exposure. Endodontically treated teeth are more brittle than live ones, and extracting a treated tooth that refractures later runs $2,500 to $3,500 at the same practice.

Gold or titanium-alloy crowns exist to reduce that refracture risk and are placed for working dogs, though most pets do not need one. Neither US practice publishing a root-canal price publishes a crown fee, so we quote no figure for it rather than estimating one.

Fold those into the decision honestly and the gap widens: the root canal is not $2,400 more than an extraction, it is $2,400 more plus a tail risk that an extraction does not carry.

Which teeth are worth saving

Function first. The canines and the carnassial teeth do the gripping and shearing; incisors do comparatively little, and an incisor is the tooth most owners are being quoted on when the multiplier looks worst.

Age and use come next. Vital pulp therapy — the alternative endodontic route for a recent fracture in a young dog — runs $3,000 to $4,000 at OakVet for one to two teeth, and is only on the table when the fracture is fresh.

Then the mouth around the tooth. A fractured tooth in a mouth that also needs a full dental is a different bill from a fractured tooth in a clean mouth, because the dog dental cleaning cost and the radiographs are billed in the same anesthetic event either way.

One caveat on the regional table below before you use it as a budget. Every row in it is indexed — the national range scaled by CareCredit's published 50-state cost index, which runs about 0.82x in Oklahoma to 1.79x in Hawaii — because no state-level root-canal survey exists to scale it against.

The one row that can be checked against reality is California, and it holds: the indexed $930 to $5,010 brackets both Californian practices' published quotes. Treat the others as an order of magnitude, not a quote.

None of this applies to cats in the same shape, where the dominant dental cost is resorption rather than fracture — that is priced separately on our cat teeth cleaning price page.

Northeast (indexed)
No root-canal price survey exists. The national range is scaled by the Northeast median of CareCredit's published 50-state ophthalmic and dental cost index, 1.08x.
Midwest (indexed)
National range scaled by the Midwest median of CareCredit's published 50-state cost index, 0.88x.

What changes the price

Two invoices for the same procedure diverge for a small number of reasons. These are the ones that move the total most.

Board-certified veterinary dentist versus a general dental practice
$700 as a published starting price at a general dental practice (Pet Dental USA, Arizona) against $3,500-$5,000 at a board-certified specialty hospital (OakVet Animal Specialty Hospital, Oakland, California) and $4,000-$4,500 at a veterinary dental centre (Aggie Animal Dental Center, Mill Valley, California) - a 5x to 6x gap for the same named procedure
Which tooth is being treated
A canine tooth has one root; the maxillary fourth premolar (carnassial) has three, and each root is a separate canal to clean, disinfect and fill. Root canal treatment takes longer under anesthesia and costs more than an extraction (Aggie Animal Dental Center)
Extraction is the cheaper alternative to the same problem
A simple extraction averages $78 per tooth and a complex extraction $130 (CareCredit/ASQ360 2025 national averages), so pulling a fractured tooth costs a small fraction of saving it. The trade is that the tooth is gone and a working or large-breed dog loses that bite
How far the fracture extends
Root canal is not an option for fractures that extend below the gumline; extraction is recommended for those teeth (Aggie Animal Dental Center). That is decided from the radiographs, so an estimate can change to an extraction plan after the dog is already under
Failure and re-treatment
+$2,500-$3,000 to extract the tooth or $3,500-$4,000 for surgical root canal treatment if persistent inflammation means the first treatment failed, plus follow-up imaging (Aggie Animal Dental Center). Treated teeth are also more brittle: +$2,500-$3,500 to extract a tooth that refractures later
Prosthodontic crown
Gold or titanium-alloy crowns are placed for working dogs to reduce the chance of refracture, though most pets do not need one (Aggie Animal Dental Center). Neither US practice publishing a root-canal price publishes a crown fee, so no figure is quoted here
State cost level
The same 2.2x geographic spread that CareCredit measures across every other veterinary procedure - roughly 0.82x in Oklahoma to 1.79x in Hawaii against the national average

Does pet insurance cover dog root canal?

Dog Root Canal is normally covered by a standard accident-and-illness policy. Most root canals follow a fractured tooth, and a fracture is an accident rather than routine dental care - which is the side of the line accident-and-illness policies pay on. The claim usually turns on two things: whether the fracture is documented as new rather than a chronic finding noted before enrolment, and whether the carrier applies a dental exclusion or a dental sub-limit. Several carriers require a dental exam within the previous 12-13 months before they will pay any dental claim. A root canal chosen over a cheaper extraction is normally still covered, because both are accepted treatments for the same diagnosis.

What you would get back: 70-90% of the covered bill after the deductible, subject to any annual dental sub-limit. On a $3,500 specialty root canal that is the difference between paying $350 and paying the whole thing.

Coverage rules differ enough between carriers that the only useful answer is a side-by-side: our pet insurance comparison for dog root canal shows which policies pay for it, what the waiting period is, and what counts as pre-existing.
