What is specific to Columbus
- SOS of Ohio, the clinic on East Livingston Avenue that most Columbus resource lists still send people to, states on its own site that it is discontinuing the majority of its operations effective immediately. It is not scheduling spay/neuter surgeries at all; what remains is seven wellness days with Ohio State veterinary students and its work inside the Franklin County Dog Shelter. Its published prices are recorded here because they are still on the page, not because surgery can be booked.
- Capital City Spay and Neuter Clinic's own price sheet, dated 1 January 2026, carries a line in capitals saying it is unable to offer dog spay procedures at this time because of appointment volume. It will still neuter a male dog at $160-$300 by weight and spay a cat for $85, so an owner with an unspayed female dog has to look elsewhere.
- Cat Welfare Association is not a clinic, it is a voucher fund. You apply, it reviews applications and issues vouchers weekly, and you redeem the voucher at a participating veterinary office. It states that it does not review applications or issue vouchers on a walk-in basis, no exceptions, and the programme only covers cats living in Delaware, Fairfield, Franklin, Licking, Madison, Pickaway or Union County.

How low-cost vet clinics decide who they will treat

H.O.P.E. Vaccine Clinics

Who qualifies: No income test and no appointment. All dogs must be on secure collars and leashes and kept separate from other dogs; cats must be in carriers. Breeders are not allowed at these clinics because the organisers strongly support spay/neuter, and litters should use the Rascal Unit's regular wellness clinics instead.
H.O.P.E. stands for Helping Others Prevent Euthanasia, and the clinics were started in 2016 after a distemper scare at the Franklin County Dog Shelter. There is no fixed address: Central Ohio Pit Savers pays $750 per clinic to bring out the mobile Rascal Unit and hosts it at a different Central Ohio site each month. PetPromise City Kitty Program

Who qualifies: Feral cats only, and only where a caretaker is willing and committed to feed and care for the cats as outdoor feral cats for the rest of their lives. You must download and read the full City Kitty Guide and complete the PetPromise City Kitty Program Agreement before applying. PetPromise states that due to cuts to grants and funding for this program it now considers all requests for assistance case by case, to determine whether funding is available.
No street address because PetPromise has no shelter, sanctuary or clinic - it is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) working through foster homes, with a mailing address of PO Box 14802, Columbus, Ohio 43214 and a voicemail-only phone line. Even when spay/neuter funding is unavailable, PetPromise lends humane traps and provides trapping guidance, post-surgical care advice and ongoing support to novice colony caregivers. Who qualifies: Open to the public with no income test or residency rule, and accepting new patients with same-day appointments available. Appointments and cancellations are taken by phone on (614) 292-1573 only. Bring a government-issued photo ID to check in. Costs are estimated in the exam room after the faculty veterinarian examines your pet, and you sign the estimate before treatment; payment for all services is due at discharge by personal check with identification or credit card - the clinic no longer accepts cash but provides a reverse ATM that converts cash to a payment card. CareCredit is accepted. Free client parking adjacent to the entrance.
Be clear-eyed about this one: it is a teaching primary-care practice, not a discount clinic, and it publishes no prices at all - the only figure you get is the estimate handed to you in the exam room. What it offers instead is the full primary-care spectrum (wellness, sick visits, spay/neuter, dental, chronic-condition care, end-of-life counselling) with on-site imaging, laboratory, pharmacy and surgical suites, plus a direct referral path into Ohio State's specialty hospital next door. Visits are led by a senior veterinary student under a faculty veterinarian, so waits are longer than at a normal practice.
