Potty Training an Adult Dog: Rule Out Disease First

Exclude a medical cause before you write a schedule, because anything that increases urine volume, elimination frequency, pain on elimination or control will defeat any training plan — then run the same regimen a puppy gets, outdoors with the dog, food rewarded immediately, and supervision or confinement in between.

Key facts

Difficulty
Moderate — needs consistency, not skill
Time to results
3 to 8 weeks of a strict schedule once a medical cause has been excluded
What you need
A veterinary exam and a urine sample before you start; A lead, so you go outside with the dog rather than sending it out; Food rewards carried outside, delivered the second the dog finishes; A written log of every elimination, indoors and out, with times
When to get professional help
House soiling that starts suddenly in a previously clean adult, soiling with increased drinking, straining, blood or a change in gait, soiling in a dog over eight, and soiling that happens only when the dog is left alone all need a veterinarian before a trainer.
What it costs if it goes wrong
A delayed diagnosis of the urinary, gastrointestinal or cognitive disease behind it — $66 typical, $56 to $130 (Vetpriced price data)
Approach
Reward-based only, per the AVSAB position statement

Five different problems look identical on the carpet

Urine on the floor is a sign, not a diagnosis, and MSD's chapter separates the presentations that produce it. Getting this wrong is why a strict schedule sometimes changes nothing at all.

Incomplete house training. The dog has never learned where to go, or learned it somewhere that no longer applies.

Marking. MSD describes it as normal social and olfactory communication — small volumes, vertical surfaces, a raised leg, often over another animal's odour, and commonest in intact males but present in females and neutered dogs too.

Excitement, deferential or conflict elimination. Urine released during greetings, when startled, or while crouching or rolling over. MSD notes many cases involve conflicting motivations, and the treatment is to avoid the triggers — reaching, approaching, eye contact — not to house train harder.

Anxiety-related elimination. Dogs with separation distress or noise phobias may eliminate when exposed to what frightens them, and MSD says treatment should target the underlying problem. If it only happens when you are out, start with crating a dog with separation anxiety.

Cognitive dysfunction. House soiling is one of the six signs in MSD's DISHAA description of canine cognitive dysfunction, and it arrives with disorientation, changed sleep and anxiety rather than alone.

The medical list comes first

MSD's instruction is not a caveat at the end; it is the first step. House soiling can be caused by pain, impaired mobility, sensory decline, cerebrocortical disease including cognitive dysfunction, or any medical condition that increases urine volume, increases frequency, causes pain on elimination, or reduces control — and "physical health problems must be excluded as potential causes or contributing factors."

The diagnostic table in MSD's behaviour chapter lists house soiling under urogenital disease, pain, gastrointestinal disease and neurological disease. A review of veterinary behaviourists' caseloads found between 28% and 82% of behaviour patients showed signs of pain.

So the appointment comes before the schedule, and it needs a urine sample. A urinary tract infection alone covers frequency, urgency and pain on elimination, and no amount of taking the dog out hourly will fix it.

There is one more environmental cause MSD names that owners rarely consider: barriers to outdoor elimination. Rain, fireworks, a neighbour's dog, a slippery step. A dog that is frightened of the garden is not failing to understand the rule.

How to house train an adult dog

The regimen is the same one a puppy gets, and the reason adults respond to it is that it removes opportunity rather than relying on the dog knowing better.

Get the exam and the urine sample first

Say what you are seeing: volume, frequency, whether the dog strains, whether it is drinking more, and whether it happens when you are out. Those details point the examination, and skipping this step is how people spend two months on a schedule that could not have worked.

Go outside with the dog, every time

Not opening the door and waiting inside. MSD's regimen has the owner accompany the dog to a designated outdoor area, which is the only way you can be certain the dog eliminated and the only way step three is possible.

Reward immediately, outdoors, with food

The moment the dog finishes, not when it comes back in. A reward delivered thirty seconds later at the back door reinforces coming to the back door.

Take the dog out on the predictable schedule

MSD names the times elimination is most likely: after meals, on waking, and after activity such as play. Add first thing, last thing, and every two hours in the first week, then stretch the interval as the log allows.

Supervise indoors, or confine

Between trips the dog is either where you can see it — a lead attached to you works — or in a pen, crate or room it treats as a resting place. MSD's rule is to use confinement only when supervision is impossible, and the crate protocol is in crate training a dog.

Log everything and use the log

Every elimination, indoors and out, with the time. Two weeks of that shows you the actual interval, the times of day that fail, and whether the problem is shrinking — which is information a feeling about how it is going does not give you.

Why an adult dog can be harder than a puppy

Not because of age, and MSD gives the specific reason. Dogs obtained from places where they were extensively caged, such as pet stores, and dogs that have lived exclusively outdoors "might be more difficult to housetrain, because they have never had to inhibit elimination."

That is the missing sentence in most rescue advice. A dog that spent its first two years eliminating where it slept has not learned a bad habit; it has never developed the inhibition that house training assumes is already there, and building it takes longer than teaching a naive puppy.

Two other adult-specific factors matter. A previously clean dog that has been soiling for months has a strong history of eliminating indoors, which takes time to overwrite. And a dog whose surface preference formed on concrete, gravel or newspaper may need that surface reproduced outdoors before it will use the garden.

We could not find a published figure for how long house training an adult dog takes. Three to eight weeks with a strict schedule is the range we would plan for, and it is an estimate rather than a sourced number.

Why punishment makes this worse

MSD covers both versions and rejects both. Punishing a dog after finding the evidence is ineffective, because the dog cannot connect the punishment to something it did earlier, and the punishment "might thus cause anxiety."

Punishing a dog caught in the act is described as counterproductive for a more specific reason: it "can trigger a fear of eliminating in the presence of the owner, which will impede housetraining." That is the dog which stops going outside while you are watching and then goes behind the sofa — a problem created entirely by the correction.

MSD's replacement is a neutral interrupter. Clap your hands or whistle, take the dog outside, and reward when it resumes there. AVSAB recommends reward-based methods for all dog training including behaviour problems, and the AAHA behaviour management guidelines make the same call.

Clean thoroughly, and clean the whole area rather than the visible mark, so the spot stops smelling like an established site. Ammonia-based cleaners are worth avoiding for the obvious reason.

Can an adult dog be house trained?

Yes, and the process is the same as a puppy's with a medical exclusion in front of it. What changes the timeline is history — a dog that was extensively caged or lived outdoors may never have had to inhibit elimination at all, which MSD names as a specific reason some adults take longer.

My dog is house trained but pees in the house sometimes. Why?

Look at volume and posture before you look at training. Small amounts on vertical surfaces with a raised leg is marking, which MSD treats as normal communication and manages with supervision and neutering rather than with house training; full bladders on horizontal surfaces point at a medical cause or at a schedule that is too long.

How long does it take to potty train an adult dog?

Plan for three to eight weeks of a strict schedule once disease is excluded. There is no published figure for this and any page that gives you a precise one is guessing.

My rescue dog was clean and has started soiling. What now?

That is a change, and changes are diagnostic questions. MSD lists house soiling under urogenital disease, pain, gastrointestinal disease and cognitive dysfunction, and if the dog is also waking or calling out at night, read dog barking at night as well — what the examination that answers this costs comes from our own vet cost research.

What this behaviour costs when it goes wrong

This is not only a quality-of-life question. Where it ends in a veterinary bill, we publish the price of that bill from our own dataset rather than leaving the stakes abstract. These are the outcomes it leads to, and what they cost.
